Decals for Scale Models
A Decal is perhaps the only way to provide the fine detail needed for the emblems and graphics on scale models. Best of all, decals are relatively easy to use and give good results. The thin nature of decals makes them far superior to stickers. Thin decals look like a natural part of the model.
Model building is a hobby dedicated to recreating an actual historical item. It is not about being creative, but about perusing historical accuracy. A model kit may offer a few variations. But after choosing a variation it is up to the individual to display their constructive skill by accurately reproducing a significant piece of history. Except for a protective finish the Decals are usually the final touch on any scale model.
A QUICK GUIDE
When applying decals the surface of the scale model should be painted gloss or semi-gloss. These surfaces seem to give far better results as they are completely flat. Matt finishes have slightly rough surfaces, meaning the decal have tiny air pockets beneath them. Decals on matt finishes have a slightly silver look, which is unrealistic. A couple of layers of clear gloss finish will allow decals to bond well to a matt paint surface. Coating the model with another layer of vanish will help protect the decal. Latter using matt vanish will return the colour scheme to a matt finish if required.
Individual decals on a backing sheet should be cut out separately. The decals and the backing sheet behind them can then be soaked in water. You can perhaps add a drop of dish washing liquid to this water. When the decals are slippery enough to slide around on the backing paper they are ready to be applied. This should only take a few seconds. Simply position the decal and the backing sheet in the appropriate place, and slide the backing sheet away. Once they are in place the decal should then be left to dry.
In some situations a decal is best applied before final assembly. There is no single rule that covers every situation here, but if it will be awkward to apply a decal on a finish model it might be advisable to apply some decals earlier on.
