Getting the Best Results with Scale Models
Scale models come in many sizes and types, from military aircraft to model trains. But from simple to challenging all models require skill and knowledge for assembly, and if we want superior results then we need some additional knowledge and more practiced skills.
– Know you subject. If we know what the model should look like then we have a far better chance of getting it right. Do some research on the particular model train or aircraft that you are building.
– Look at the Scale. Models vary in size, and in the scale they have compared to the vehicle they portray.
A larger scale model will either tend to be easier to build, or have more intricate detail. Build according to your skill level.
Larger models take us a lot of space in display cabinets, and if you build a large model train the layout will have to be even bigger.
– Get a set of good quality tools for model building. These will last for years so they are a worthy investment. Knives, Tweezers, fine files, snips, a small vice, some good fine paint brushes …etc.
– Use a good adhesive. A tiny amount should be enough to hold the parts.
– Work in a well ventilated room – solvents, glue and paint have nasty fumes.
– Read assembly instructions. There is always something unique in any model, so you don’t want to miss something that is hard to undo.
– Test fit part before you glue. Perhaps file some rough edges if they cause problems.
– Be patient and do not hurry the process. If you have to leave something overnight to set properly, then do so. Look to the end result and enjoy the process, don’t rush.
– Have a tray or small plastic box to hold small parts. It is infuriating to lose a small but essential part.
Get a good quality overhead light, or have a place with good natural light.
– If you are building model trains, think about the layout, building and accessories early on, so you don’t run into scale problems (the train is too big for the layout, the accessories are too small) latter on.
– A magnifying glass or something similar will be useful from time to time.
– Plastic Model decals provide the fine detail that paint cannot achieve. You can make you own decals with inkjet decal paper.
Scale Models
You can print your own decals for scale models and model trains with inkjet decal paper. This works on almost any home computer system.
