Appeal of Kit building and Plastic Model Decals

Building realistic scale models has always held a lot of appeal. The reason for this may not be certain, but most people are happy to enjoy the process and results of model building without question. If you enjoy something, and there are no side effects, then why not?

Of course, we would prefer to get the best results possible when building. We invest some time and money in a model kit, so we want to make good on this. so how do we get the best results, while still enjoying ourselves.

Start Simple – We probably all did this. We started with the simplest list type of model and worked upward, improving our skill as we went. Then again, more than a few of us tried to build a model that was a little too advanced because it was from a favourite film of comic. And we probably had some fun that ended in disappointment. Still, we learn something from the experience.

Essential Basic Tools –

– A sharp hobby knife.
– An older, used hobby knife used as a scrapper.
– Good paint brushes, including one for fine work
– Old paint brushes for drying surfaces. Or Q-tips.
– Some good clamps and clips for holding parts as the glue sets.
– Quality paints.
– A small file, or emery board, for removing burrs on the model parts.
– Tape for neat edges when painting, or occasionally holding parts.
– A good light, preferably on a movable stand.
– Glue.

Odd household items of use.

– Blu Tak, for holding models or parts when painting.
– Small containers for holding paint and materials.
– Plastic Lids for mixing paint.
– Toothpicks for stirring paint.
– Tin foil holds paint, and can be then be disposed of.
– Paper towels, which have many uses.

Customising with Plastic Model Decals

Most model kits come with a sheet of decals. Sometimes there were two options for these decals, but model builders were always limited to what the model kit came with. This changed with the advent of waterslide decal paper. Now anybody with a general home computer and printer can design and print (or scan and print) high quality decals. This means customising commercial model kits, or making decals for 3D printed projects.
