Printing Waterslide Decals for Woodwork: A Comprehensive Guide

Choosing the Right Decal Paper
Use clear waterslide decal paper for woodwork projects. Clear decals seamlessly blend with the wood’s natural tones, allowing the design to appear as if it’s part of the wood rather than an applied decal.
Timber Preparation
Sanding & Coating: Begin with a thorough sanding of the wood surface to ensure it is smooth, flat and level. Then apply overcoat to make the surface glossy.
Cleaning: Wipe down the wood with a damp, lint-free cloth to remove any dust or debris. This promotes better adhesion of the waterslide decal.

Printing Process

Soaking: Immerse the decal in water until the film starts to loosen. Be cautious not to oversoak (no more than 1 minute), as it can affect the adhesive properties.
Wood Application
Placement: Carefully slide the decal onto the wood, positioning it accurately. The wet surface allows for adjustments before it adheres.
Removing Air Bubbles: Gently press out any air bubbles using a soft cloth or rubber squeegee, starting from the centre and working outward.
Protective Coating
After the decal dries completely, apply a protective coating. Use a clear polyurethane (if laser waterslide decal paper) or acrylic sealer (inkjet waterslide decal paper) to harden the decal. Ensure the coating is fully cured before handling the woodwork.
