Plastic Scale Models
Model kits have been an important part of many childhoods. And more than a few adults continue the hobby into their later years, often progressing to more elaborate, and perhaps customized models.
A model is usually made from commercially available plastic kits, which are assembled, painted and detailed. The finished product is proudly displayed, sometimes in isolation, sometimes as part of a larger setting.
Plastic model kits are available in a wide range of subject and areas, from commercial and military aircraft to racing cars, tanks and other vehicles. They greatly vary in difficulty, with younger enthusiasts encouraged to start on easy projects.
The scale of models varies. This is the size of the model compared to the actual vehicle. A 1/10 model car would be literally one tenth the size of a real car (which is still quite large). More often model cars and planes come in 1/32 or 1/72. Of course if we keep our models in groups of the same scale they will be in appropriate size to each other.
Model Decals
Decals are often used to add fine details to scale models. Often these plastic model decals were the only way to add fine insignia, text or flags to a model; paint could never achieve this level of tiny detail.
Commercial models often came with a set of decals to apply after painting. Sometimes two options were provided. But model makers were limited to the decals that were provided. customization was impossible.
But customization is now possible with inkjet decal paper. This allows anybody with a computer and printer to create their own decals. Anything that can be produced on a computer screen, from graphics to photos, can be scaled down and turned into a decal. So plastic scale models can easily have custom decal markings.
Model Trains
More than other types of vehicle the model trains are customized. Both the train vehicles and the layouts benefits from customization. So decals can be printed and used to add details to signs, vehicles, buildings, roads and all other parts of a train set layout.
