Applying Clear Coats to Scale Models

Scale Models

If we go to the trouble of building a scale model we will want to get the best possible results. This means painting, applying waterslide decals, and perhaps applying a final clear coat.
Of course we need to make sure that these processes do not clash. It is possible for a clear coat to cause problems with the decals. And we might ask if it is best to put the decals on before or after this clear coat. The answer is sometimes both.

Clear coats on Scale Models

There are generally two type of clear coats used for models, Gloss and Matt. There is also a semi-gloss coat, between these two type, but this is not hardly ever used for scale model work.
Gloss coats would suit racing cars, where the actual vehicle is highly polished. But this is inappropriate for old vehicles, like military planes or tanks, where the surface is Matt, and usually a little worn. Such models do better with a clear Matt finish.

Plastic Model Decals

Decals look best when put on a completely flat surface. This means a surface that has a near mirror finish. So a gloss surface, from gloss paint or gloss clear coat, looks best. If we try to put decals on a Matt surface there will be microscopic air bubbles underneath the decal, giving the image an odd silver texture. This odd texture is especially noticeable around the edges, where the decal should be clear. It rather ruins the appearance of the models when the decals have a silver boarder like this.
If the scale model has a gloss finish then decals work quite well.

If the scale models are meant to have a Matt finish we need to use some trick to make the decals look good. Use Matt paint on the model, then give is a clear gloss finish. Once it has set, apply the plastic model decals over this gloss. Then, when it is all dry, give the model a Matt gloss coating, to restore the Matt look.
a word or warning – do not put a clear coat over a clear plastic piece, like a windshield or window. Unfortunately this often ruins the clear plastic. Instead, apply these parts after applying the clear coat.
As an added bonus the final clear coat should protect the model decals.

Model Trains

Model trains usually have a Matt finish, though some high tech trains have a glossy look. So if we apply waterslide decals to models trains we will often have to apply a glossy clear layer, then apply the decal, then apply the final clear Matt finish.
In some cases the model train enthusiast may like the slightly old, rustic look of a decal on a Matt surface; it looks a little like an actual poster, or worn paint.

Scale Models

Waterslide decal paper can be used to create decals for any scale model, model train, or for any other surface. Unleash your creativity.
