Scale Models
There is a lot of appeal in making a scale model of something we admire. And there is a lot of satisfaction in finishing the model. Ideally we want the little model to look as much like the real thing as possible. There are several ways to do this.
Paint
Almost every hobby model is painted. This works best if we clean the parts of the model before assembly, and use gloves while building so we do not get finger grease on the final product.
Primer undercoat will help get a good paint result.
It helps if we paint some parts before assembly, or while the model is partly finished. This is because these parts are hard to reach when the model is complete.
Thinner paint is vastly preferable because it will tend to not show brushstrokes.
Take measures to make sure that the clear parts of the kit do not get paint on them. If possible try to paint before these parts are put on the kit.
Model Decals
Decals provide the tiny details, the insignia, flags, number plates, text, racing logos, that cannot be reproduced with paint. There is a long history of decals being provided with commercial models. But some hobbyists like to add their own decals, printed on their home printers. This can be done if we want to create a specific vehicle rather than a generic type of vehicle. We might want a specific racing car driver’s name on a sports car, or the type of military plane flown in a specific year. Home printed model decals can do this.
Model Decals will get the best results on smooth glossy surfaces, because there will be no microscopic air bubbles under the decal. If the model is not meant to be glossy e can add a Matt finish after the decals are applied.
Scale Models
Get the best results with commercial or home designed models by adding model decals. Inkjet decal paper allows you to print your own designs.
