Scale Models
Most of us have hobbies of some sort. These provide a sense of satisfaction that some careers may not otherwise give. And perhaps fulfill a need that even family and relationships do not fully provide.
We may speculate on the reason we are attracted to a particular hobby, or even to the idea of hobbies. But one appealing aspect of a hobby is perhaps the sense of involvement we feel when creating something. Most of our lives are spend in houses we did not build, and working jobs in large institutions where we are small parts in a large machine. These are not bad in themselves. But we are living in a civilization created by others, and this can leave a sense of detachment. But if we have a creative hobby we can have a small aspect of our lives where we can be completely involved in what we do.
Model Trains
Model trains and there layout remain a popular hobby. This hobby combines pre-made models, usually the trains, with customized layouts, created by the individual hobbyist. Sometimes these layouts are completely original, sometimes they recreate historical or present day scenes. In both cases the hobbyist is very involved in the creative process, and gains some insight into how technology and society grows over time.
In earlier ages of civilization, and in pre-civilized time, individuals had no choice about doing some Manuel labor, building some shelter, working on farmland or at least working with their hand in some fashion. This gave a sense on connection and involvement with the surrounding world that is often lost today. constructive, creative hobbies restore some of this lost feeling of involvements.
